When a business is in startup mode, usually the entrepreneur looks for ways to cut costs while obtaining all of the necessary objectives to run their business.
In the case of a voice talent, building a home recording studio is paramount to their success and fundamental to conducting business on a daily basis.
That being said, a voice talent entrepreneur’s highest expense when getting started is the equipment to build their home recording studio. Ideally, a professional-grade home recording studio comprises of a computer, recording and editing software, a professional microphone, a microphone stand, head phones, mixing board, speakers (to hear the balance of your mix with), and a proper room to record in. This recording studio, or room, may be a full-out sound booth or a spare bedroom depending on the resources available to the voice talent.
To give us an idea of what’s out there, professional recording studios are worth tens of thousands of dollars. The most expensive recording studios cost well over 1 million dollars to construct.
On average, a professional-grade home recording studio costs in the neighborhood of $10,000 to $25,000. Smaller project studios or freelance voice talent home studios could range between $2,500 to $5,000, brand new.
Regardless of industry sector or creative background prior to the start of an imminent voice career, the purchase of a professional-grade home recording studio is the largest, most tangible investment that will be made in the life of a voice-over career.
The equipment, once purchased by the business owner, becomes a hard asset, and if need be, can be sold in order to raise funds to purchase newer, more efficient equipment in the future.
Keep in mind that these hard assets are also subject to depreciation. In Canada, computers and electronic equipment depreciate at 50% a year. That’s quite a hefty sum, meaning that a new piece of equipment could depreciate significantly in less than 3 years.
When someone is in the market to buy gently used recording studio equipment, the odds that they will be getting a great deal and equipment in good condition are definitely in their favor. There are many places that buy and sell used equipment ranging from the local newspaper classifieds to online listings on eBay.
There is no shortage of second-hand equipment looking for a good home, that’s for certain, but how can you tell if the equipment is worth the asking price and if it will happily meet your needs?
First off, always be sure to seek out photographs of the object you are interested in. If you are networking locally with someone, setup a meeting to evaluate the equipment in person, including a test-drive of what the piece can do for you and how it operates.
Check for scratches, dents, loose items, and quality. Brand names the likes of Shure, Neumann, and Digi002 are high-end whereas a microphone from an all-purpose electronics store in the mall may be less professional.
Ask where the item was purchased, how much it was purchased for, and when it was purchased. Knowing these variables will give you the leverage you need to decide whether the price for the equipment is fair or way off base. You can also request a copy of the original receipt.
Ask for original boxes, warranties, and user guides. This documentation will prove that you are purchasing from the original owner.
Some manufacturers offer “transfer of ownership” papers allowing you to benefit from free software and hardware upgrades or promotions in the future. The serial number would then be registered under the purchasers name, thus making you eligible to receive bonuses and free upgrades by virtue of your business dealings.
Your return on investment will be evident in good usage of your equipment. As long as you are learning how to use it, you will get something out of it.

What will happen if you are a competent, talented, and compassionate Yoga teacher, without enough dedicated students? Here is a simple answer: Don’t quit your “day job” and don’t open a Yoga studio of your own. Sorry to be so blunt, but you need time to grow your following.
When, or if, you develop a following as an independent contractor, then and only then, think about opening a Yoga center. This is not meant to be harsh, but there are enough Yoga centers with poor business skills to go around, and you don’t need to lose every penny you saved without developing sound business plans.
Therefore, please take time to develop a Yoga business plan with goals and estimated time frames. Unfortunately, I have seen too many Yoga studios open with a “one month plan.” Can you imagine opening an ashram without a telephone, getting caught up in zoning board complications, or just hoping for the best? One poorly organized Yoga studio makes all Yoga teachers look bad, and leaves the public thinking every Yoga studio is like that.
How do you feel when you go to a deli for the 20th time and the counter help tries to avoid you? Do you feel like going back again, when, half the time, they get your order wrong? Where am I going with this?
Every Yoga studio should have an appointed person for customer service and public relations. Yoga teachers should know all of their students’ names “by heart.” If you ignore your Yoga students, there is no reason for them to stay. They will feel unwelcome and unworthy. One of the worst ways to handle a student / teacher relationship is to ignore a Yoga student.
Be careful of perceptions that make you feel like you are better than your Yoga students. Remember that your students pay you to teach Yoga. You should treat them like your best friends. How many of your friends are paying for your meals, car, mortgage, or your vacations? Your Yoga students are “number one.”
Doing the “little extras,” keeps Yoga students. When a student has a question, it is your job to give an informed answer; and if you do not have one, consult with a senior or master Yoga teacher. If you are not a “people person,” do not become a Yoga teacher.
Make sure that the person who answers your phone loves people. You can’t keep a Yoga studio open with a grumpy receptionist. The receptionist is their initial “gate keeper” of a Yoga studio, and for Yoga students, that gate should be held open with a wide smile.
Each Yoga studio should be a haven for students to find what they seek, without putting up with inferior service. They face far too much of it, outside the Yoga class. You should know the needs of your students and promise only what you can deliver.

One of the biggest struggles I had in starting my business was actually coming up with the idea. I wanted something that was scalable as well as needed in our society. I combed through hundreds of ideas before settling on my current venture. Through this discovery period, I uncovered what I believe are the five most important concepts in determining what makes the perfect business idea.
So, what is a perfect idea? Each individual entrepreneur has their concept of the perfect business. While Google is a great business for the founders of that company – it may not be a great business for others that are non-tech savvy or who do not want to run such a large organization.
Therefore, each perfect business is defined by the business owners. Keeping this in mind, let’s start on my five concepts of finding the perfect business:
Number One – Understanding your customer: This might seem strange to start here as how do you know your customers before you have a business idea in place. The answer is simple – your customers make the business, therefore without customers there is no business. If you have a business idea don’t try to develop the idea around what YOU think potential customers will like or need, but find out what your customers actually desire. Too often business owners get an idea in their head and jump right in with both feet. However, they soon find out that their target market does not want what they are offering. Spending both time and money on a project just to see it languish is not the perfect business idea.
Moreover, let’s say you don’t already have an idea – getting out and understand consumers (those who will eventually become your customers) may lead you to the perfect idea. Knowing what potential consumers need and building products to meets those needs will get customers beating a path to your door – that is a perfect business idea.
Number Two – Passion: Passion here does not mean being fanatical about your product or service. But, it does mean having some interest in what you do. More times than not, you will be spending 15 to 18 hours a day working on your business in the beginning – usually for the first 12 to 18 months (more like 2 years in this economy). You have to constantly be thinking about ways to improve and grow your business as well as be out talking about it to everyone, everywhere. If you end up starting a venture that you don’t have passion for, something that does not make you jump out of bed each morning, it will be very hard to put in the hours and energy to make it successful – thus not a perfect business idea.
Number Three – Understand Your Competition: Every business has competition – either direct or indirect. Think about movie theaters. They have direct competition from video rental stores or at home television. They also have indirect competition from any other activity that consumers spend their disposable income on like bowling, paint ball, golf, etc. Anything that people do in their spare time.
Further, some competitors are ruthless. Meaning that if you promote and offer a product that is similar to theirs but at a lower price, these competitors will just lower their price to match or beat you. If they are already established businesses – they may be able to undercut your price enough to drive you out of business.
If you don’t know your competition – what they are willing to do to keep you out of their market – you may be spending more of your time in a pricing war then growing your business – not the perfect business idea.
Number Four – Cash Flow: Lots of entrepreneurs enter the business world with great ideas but very poor understanding of the capital it will take to get their venture off the ground. Most will prototype their product or service and understand what it takes to make the product or provide the service but they don’t understand the capital it takes to manage the rest of the organization – including marketing (very expensive but extremely necessary), employees (more than just salaries or wages), insurance or supplies and all the little miscellaneous expenses that add up very quickly like phone, internet, computer services, etc. Knowing your total cash flow will help ensure that all of your costs (variable and fixed) can be covered by the business – the perfect business idea. I have seen way too many businesses with great products fail because they could not cover simple expenses like rent or utilities.
Number Five – You: Know who you are. Know your strengths and weaknesses. Know that you are ready, willing and able to do what it takes to make your venture a success. I have worked with many business owners in the past that think all they have to do is hang out their shingle and they have it made. Thus, when it comes down to actually running the business day-to-day – they are unwilling to invest the time, energy or money necessary for success. Thus, know how hard you are willing to work.
Moreover, know your personal financial situation and what you need the business to generate to cover your lifestyle. If you think your business will pay you a great salary from day one – it will not. And, if you need it to, it is not the perfect business idea for you. Take away outside distractions like your personal financial situation – get those in order – thus, when your business concept does materialize – you will be able to solely focus on its conception and growth. In the end providing you the financial security you are seeking – it will be the perfect business idea.
Regardless of the level of your desire for your business – a lifestyle mom and pop operation or a multi-national conglomerate – if you develop a business idea with these five concepts in mind – your idea will be the perfect business idea for you.

The manufacturers of toothpaste bleaching promise to the white and shiny teeth. An effective advertising, albeit approximate and misleading, which broadens the market.
Having white teeth and shiny is a desirable goal that pushes many to the purchase of these toothpastes for oral hygiene daily. But as so often the truth is another. With the use of toothpastes “bleaching” is evocative of abrasive effective spots on the enamel surface but with no effect on the improvement of intrinsic tooth color, which can get worse. With prolonged use of whitening toothpaste dental enamel is consumed to abrasion and tooth lose the natural translucent ezza that derives from its proper thickness. Super ficializzandosi the dentin color becomes opaque and yellowish.
Who brush your teeth regularly has no stains surface of the enamel to be eliminated, should not apply the intense action produced by abrasive toothpastes bleach, let alone for long periods of time. We dentists, on the basis of precise scientific evidence, recommend the use of toothpastes with a low index of abrasiveness.
So when you purchase toothpaste should be assessed on its index of abrasiveness. The acronym that represents the RDA, which stands for Relative Dentin Abrasivity. Above 100 this value is too high, and over time can cause damage to the enamel. …read the rest of this entry»
The snow, the waiting has finally arrived, and with it the desire to take a week or just a weekend of skiing and hiking in the snow. To disconnect from everyday life, oxygen, and, why not tan. The sun at high altitude, however, is stronger and potentially more harmful than it takes to the sea in summer. And the risk sunburn, but not only, is always around the corner. To address this winter sun safely we must never forget to protect the skin from sunlight and to take specific precautions.
We spoke with Dr. Roberta Lovreglio, dermatologist, head of Ambulatory Oncologico League of Dermatological Tumori in Bari
WHY THE SUN IN WINTER, A High, is a particularly insidious?
For several reasons. First Mountain ultraviolet rays penetrate more easily in epidermis because they are more powerful and abundant. The intensity of solar radiation increases with increasing altitude, while the atmospheric pressure is reduced, thereby diminishing its power filter. To make things worse then it puts the glare of snow, which should be reflected radiation strikes the skin, not only from above but also from the bottom up, a little ‘like a boat where you reflect on the UV water’s surface. The damage of the sun is then the sum of the wind and cold, making the skin more sensitive and reduces the normal barrier hydrolipidic favoring irritation or cracking which in turn increases the vulnerability to sunlight. The temperatures are particularly hard because they also have harmful effects “anesthetic” and alter the perception of heat on the skin, exposing even more dangerous to the risk of burns. So, never exposed to the sun without adequate protection. …read the rest of this entry»
The skin of the child requires a lot of attention because the stratum corneum, particularly subtle, it is not yet able to play a protective action against external agents. In particular children must be protected from sunlight as efficiently and as soon as early childhood to prevent burns that could provide the appearance of melanoma in adulthood.
The photo protection of children should be adjusted so as to reduce the impact of sunlight on the skin. The ideal solar filter must leave intact as much as possible the natural radiation of the sun, however, lowering the intensity and allowing thus a gradual adaptation of cells photo exhibition the skin. A product of sun protection for children really effective must be made taking into account the specific characteristics of the skin infantile: …read the rest of this entry»
The oily skin is a problem, or rather an imperfection, quite widespread. Typical, but not exclusive, adolescents and young adults, gives the skin a shiny appearance and oily to the touch, hence the term “skin fat.”
The events described above would be in itself sufficient to justify the disappointment of those who suffer every day, unfortunately, however, the problems do not end there: those with oily skin, it is more likely to form acne, seborrhea dermatitis, and dandruff and Androgen tic alopecia.
In an oily skin, also, the film hydrolipidic becomes thick and waxy, obstructing perspiration and promoting the activities of the microorganisms responsible for inflammation and bad smells.
Cases of skin and fat classification
INTRODUCTION
The source of the problem “oily skin” is the hyper function of tiny glands located in the dermis deep and defined the sebaceous glands. Their job is to produce a substance grasosa, called sebum that associating lipid produced by skin keratinocytes and emulsions with liquid fraction of sweat is the hydrolipidic film. Under normal circumstances, this kind of film protects the skin, keeping it supple and hydrated, and taking away harmful elements, such as germs and bacteria. …read the rest of this entry»
Women and wrinkles: report difficult estate. For the fair sex – though in truth the men are becoming too attentissimi the physical details – the good news coming from the U.S. go-ahead to treatments that regenerate collagen. This is the conclusion reached by the researchers of the Department of Dermatology and Pathology of the University of Michigan after spending reviewed dozens of studies.
The treatments, therefore, are effective against ‘aging that is due, the skin in particular, for an enzyme – called collagens – which degrades the protein of youth, collagen. Located in the dermis, this protein supports the ’skin surface. Immersed in the matrix of collagen are the fibroblasts, namely the cells that produce the protein is the enzyme that degrades. …read the rest of this entry»
